What’s in store at the Olympics today
Good morning, I’m Verity Stevenson — a writer in Montreal. It’s only Day 3 of the 2026 Milano-Cortina Olympics and much has happened already.
Yesterday began with American ski racer Lindsey Vonn’s harrowing crash in the downhill where she broke her left leg. Vonn was airlifted after agonizing minutes on the side of the hill.
The rest of the day’s competitions saw several Canadian athletes coming up short of their hopes and no new medals. Curling mixed doubles married couple, Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant, were eliminated from playoff contention; veteran Canadian speed skater Ted-Jan Bloemen placed 13th in the men’s 5,000 metre final; and, though Canada had podium aspirations in figure skating’s team event, it ended up falling one spot to a fifth-place finish.
The hardware tally remains: one bronze medal for Valérie Maltais’s long-track speed skate Saturday 🥉.
Today is a new day and there’s still lots of time for Olympic dreams to come true. Here’s a bit of what’s in store:
- Alpine skiing: Men’s team combined in downhill starts at 4:30 a.m. ET, followed by slalom at 8 a.m. ET.
- Freestyle skiing: Megan Oldham and Naomi Urness compete in the women’s slopestyle final at 6:30 a.m. ET.
- Speed skating: Béatrice Lamarche is in the women’s 1,000 metre at 11:30 a.m. ET.
- Luge: Women’s singles at 11 a.m. and 12:35 p.m. ET.
- Ski jumping: Men’s normal hill finals at 1 p.m. and 2:12 p.m. ET.
- Figure skating: Ice dance begins at 1:20 p.m. ET.
- Snowboarding: Women’s big air finals are at 1:30 p.m., 1:53 p.m. and 2:17 p.m. ET.
- Curling: Mixed doubles round robin matches continue throughout the day, but Canada is out.
- Hockey: Canada’s women’s team plays Czechia at 3:10 p.m. ET.
